THE PLACE

THE PEOPLE
RELIGION

Turkey is a secular Republic that guarantees freedom of religion as a constitutional right. Historically, Turkey has been both the birthplace and the home of many local and world religions.

The majority of Turks today are Moslem, which means that they espouse the religion of Islam. Islam is a religion that claims the Koran as its holy book and maintains that there is no God but Allah. Additionally, they hold Mohammed to be the final and greatest prophet of God. Moslems believe that a person should give to the poor, fast during the daylight hours of the month of Ramadan, pray five times a day towards their holy city of Mecca, and once in their life, if possible, take a trip to Mecca itself.

There are also Turkish Christians who believe much the same as the early church, which is reflected so prominently in the history of the area. Christians believe that the Bible is God's Word and that salvation is found only through a relationship with Jesus Christ.
